In
the mid 1980’s, four turn-of-the-century row houses located on West
28th Street near Clinton Avenue were donated to St. Malachi Church. The
interior was completely gutted and rebuilt to accommodate the care
residents would require. Over 100,000 volunteer hours and the support of
trade unions and other community figures went into the original
renovation of the facility. Opened in 1988, and expanded in 2002 the
home contains facilities to accommodate 17 residents in private
bedrooms, a complete kitchen, living room, chapel, atrium and activity
room. The interior design and decor emphasize the warmth and comfort of
a home environment.
So
exemplary and unusual are the services provided that Malachi House has
become an informal training ground for many fields of study, and
regularly hosts students of nursing and medicine. Although not a part of
their formal course of study, the students are exposed to an
oft-overlooked area in their curricula - the final stages of human life.
Malachi
House receives no government funding. We are privately funded through
the generosity of individuals, foundations and corporations, as well as
an annual benefit. Malachi House is a pioneering effort whose uniqueness
requires continuing support. Countless volunteers and donors have
created an environment of comfort and companionship for those in their
final stage of living.
