Volunteers Making a
Difference
History of Volunteering: From the very start, volunteers have played an
essential role in making Malachi House what it is today. Malachi House
is located on the Near West Side of Cleveland in four
turn-of-the-century row houses. These houses were totally gutted and
renovated to meet the special needs of our residents. This was done with
the help of over 100,000 volunteer hours. When the house first opened in
1988, most of the direct care of the residents was done by volunteers as
well as virtually all of the household chores. Today, the volunteers
work in cooperation with the paid staff to meet the needs of the
residents. Our volunteers provide the kinds of services that help make
Malachi House an example of excellence in the quality of care each
resident receives. Our volunteers help to truly make Malachi House a
home.
Who Volunteers:
At Malachi House, we are fortunate to have people from all walks of life
serve as volunteers. We have high school students who volunteer as part
of senior projects; we have college students volunteer as part of
internship and service projects; we have single people and married
couples. We have homemakers with school-age children and professional
people who come after a full day at the office. We have senior citizens,
disabled people and mothers to be – in short it is a wonderfully
diverse group involved in a single ministry.
What Volunteers Do: Our volunteers are a very dedicated group of individuals.
Some have a background in healthcare, but many do not. At Malachi House,
volunteers do the kinds of tasks they are comfortable doing. Because of
the kind of home we are, a volunteer can have as much or as little
direct contact with the residents as they choose and still contribute
valuable and vital service to help the residents. Jobs and tasks that
volunteers commit to include:
• Direct Resident Care
• Music and Entertainment
• Kitchen Help - Serving Food
• Cooking and Baking (At home or at Malachi House)
• Basic House Cleaning
• Phone Answering
• Writing Thank You Notes
• Home Repair and Maintenance
• Help With Sorting and Organizing Donated Supplies.
• Office Work
• Outside Clean-Up and Gardening
Ongoing Training: Malachi House provides ongoing opportunities for training
in the form of in-services. In the past, such in-services have dealt
with topics such as care of the residents communicable disease control.
