Founded
in 1988, Malachi House is a private, non-profit home for poor,
terminally ill persons with six months or less to live. Our
residents have no able or willing caregiver, no medical insurance,
and little or no financial resources. Many come from
difficult environments. Not a hospital or a nursing home,
Malachi House instead offers them a private room in a warm, secure
environment; home-cooked meals; and the love and support of our
trained staff and volunteers, who are available 24 hours a
day. Their medical needs are provided for through a
hospice team, which visits our house regularly. Recognizing
the important physical and psychological benefits of complementary
therapies, we provide both spiritual therapy and diversional
therapy for those who wish to participate. |

Unique in the country, Malachi House provides all
services at no cost to the residents or their families. We
receive no government subsidies or insurance payments. Instead, our
home is funded solely through donations from individuals, corporations,
and foundations. We are able to accomplish our mission in large part
because of the extensive network of volunteers who donate their time
each week cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, and caring for our
residents, so that we can operate with a very small paid staff.
Moreover, the in-kind support that we receive from individuals and
organizations, especially the large donations of food, cleaning
supplies, and personal hygiene products, allow us to keep our
expenditures to a minimum.
Each year, Malachi House holds several important events
that are essential fundraisers for our home. The Malachi House Open,
a golf tournament held in early summer, is followed in August by
Krusty’s Summer Sauce Camp, a day-long party at Whiskey Island
featuring terrific food and live music. In October, the annual Malachi
House gala benefit includes fine food, live entertainment, and a
fabulous auction. Finally, in December, Lights for Life
commemorates donors’ loved ones with lights placed on our outdoor
holiday trees. Individuals and corporations from throughout greater
Cleveland serve as underwriters, donors, and sponsors for these events,
which are organized entirely through volunteer efforts. Together, these
benefits help to raise more than one fourth of our annual budget.
We are deeply appreciative for the generosity of our many
donors and volunteers, who insure that we can continue our ministry of
love and support for the remarkable men and women who live, and die, at
Malachi House.
