Resident Stories
Our ‘Star’ Stella
Stella (meaning star) was a remarkable lady who savored her life at Malachi House. From delicious foods placed before her at “the table,” to music, art, computer, books, flowers, and butterflies-all were a part of her “constellation.” She pulled her harmonica from its nesting spot in that ever-present purse as confidently as she plied her fingers to weaving or origami folds. She formed close friendships with other residents and staff. She spent week-ends with family when possible.
Then withdrawal began. In silence she wrapped herself in the protective mantle where senses reject stimulation. In nature the caterpillar encloses itself in the chrysalis stage where it is transformed into a soon-to-emerge butterfly. This mystery of resurrection was dramatized for us, through Stella, in silence.
